A common misconception is that knowing your birth date is sufficient to determine your Rasi. While Western Sun signs remain in one constellation for approximately 30 days, Tamil Vedic astrology relies upon the Moon sign (Janma Rasi).

The Moon moves at an average velocity of 13 degrees and 20 minutes per day, traversing an entire 30-degree Rasi in roughly 54 hours. If your birth occurred on a day when the Moon crossed from one sign into another, having only the date leaves your Rasi ambiguous.

Follow these three steps to identify your authentic Janma Rasi:

Every Rasi consists of exactly 2.25 Nakshatras (or 9 quarters/Padas). For example:

• Mesham (மேஷம்): Ashwini (4 padas), Bharani (4 padas), Krittika (1st pada).

• Rishabam (ரிஷபம்): Krittika (padas 2, 3, 4), Rohini (4 padas), Mrigashirsha (padas 1, 2).

When you calculate your Moon sign, you also discover your Janma Nakshatra and its specific Pada, providing the basis for traditional Tamil name syllables and birth chart analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I only know my date of birth but not the time?

If you only know your birth date, you can calculate the Moon's position at 12:00 PM (noon). However, if the Moon transitioned between two signs on that day, you will need rectification through family records or astrological consultation.

Is my English star sign the same as my Tamil Rasi?

Almost never. Your English star sign is your Western Sun sign, which is based on the tropical solar calendar and does not account for the precession of equinoxes or the Moon's position.
