In Tamil Vedic astrology, people frequently ask: 'What is the difference between my Rasi and my Nakshatra?'

Imagine the 360-degree celestial sky as a circular clock face. Astrologers divide this circle in two complementary ways:

1. By Rasi (Sign): The circle is divided into 12 equal zones of 30° each (Mesham through Meenam). This provides a broad celestial address.

2. By Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion): The same circle is divided into 27 lunar constellations of 13°20' (13 degrees 20 minutes) each (Ashwini through Revati). This provides a granular, micro-level celestial address.

Here is how the two astrological coordinates compare structurally:

AttributeRasi (ராசி)Nakshatra (நட்சத்திரம்)
Total Count12 Zodiac Signs27 Lunar Mansions
Angular Span30° 00' each13° 20' each (divided into four 3°20' Padas)
Governed ByA planetary ruler (Rasi Adhipathi, e.g., Mars for Aries)A planetary Dasha lord (e.g., Ketu, Venus, Sun)
Transit DurationMoon stays ~2.25 days in each RasiMoon stays ~1 day (~24 hours) in each Nakshatra
Primary UseDaily Rasi Palan, Sade Sati (ஏழரை சனி), Gocharam transitsVimshottari Dasha periods, auspicious Muhurtham, marriage matching

The relationship between Rasi and Nakshatra is strictly mathematical. Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 quarters called Padas (பாதம்). Each Pada spans 3 degrees and 20 minutes.

Nine Padas equal exactly 30 degrees (9 × 3°20' = 30°). Therefore, every Rasi holds exactly 9 Padas across its designated stars.

For example, in Mesham (Aries): Ashwini provides 4 Padas, Bharani provides 4 Padas, and Krittika provides its 1st Pada, completing the 9 Padas of the sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Nakshatra be shared across two different Rasis?

Yes. Several Nakshatras span the boundary between two signs. For example, Krittika's 1st Pada is in Mesham, while its 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Padas reside in Rishabam.

Which is more important for marriage matching, Rasi or Nakshatra?

Traditional Tamil Porutham (திருமணப் பொருத்தம்) relies primarily on the Nakshatras of the bride and groom to evaluate the 10 compatibility factors (Dasa Porutham).
